How I Train My Back

People often ask me how I train my back.
-
But it's really not rocket science.
-
There are 2 basic movment patterns associated with the lats and upper back.
-
Horizontal pulls (rows)
&
Vertical pulls (pull-ups)
-
What we have to do is get stronger on those.
-
One big mistake I see in most people's training is missing or neglecting one of these.
-
Another tip is to stay away from the lat pulldown machine as you're trying to get strong...
-
There isn't anything inheritly wrong with the exercise, but from my personal experience, for someone who is trying to get stronger on vertical pulling the lat pull down can be somewhat unnatural.
-
For one thing, after you get up to a certain weight, the opposing force starts pulling you off the bench 😂 (at least if you're lean)
-
Second, if you do the exercise incorrectly on the lat pulldown it can be very hard to translate the strength to other movements.
-
I see so many people do the lat pulldown with rounded forward shoulders and stay at the same weight forever.
-
I recommend focusing on pull-ups (particularly weighted pull-ups) instead.
-
Its much more natural and translates to tremendous strength in the biceps and entire posterior chain as well.
-
Let me put it this way, the lats are the biggest muscle in the upper body, we modern monkeys 🐒 used to pull ourselves up through tree branches all day, this is what the lats are made to do.
